One of the perks of my job as a teacher is having the summer off. It is always great to finally get some time for myself after pouring so much time and effort for the kids during the school year. I had a great summer; traveling, spending time with friends, seeing family (which is usually reserved for the holidays), and continuing to work toward my health and fitness goals.
Vegan lunch at Whole Foods!
In June, I traveled to D.C. to attend a conference at The Kennedy Center. It was the first time I had been there since I was a child and I loved the city! There was a great vibe - young, yet professional and hip, yet historic. Luckily, my hotel was two blocks from Whole Foods and was equipped with a fitness center. I packed a Jungle Gym XT and was able to remain pretty consistent with my workouts.
During a run in D.C.
Although the conference was great and I was enjoying D.C., I was eager to get back to ATX and my regular routine. I had missed my Vitamix and my friends, of course! Upon my return, I decided that July would be mine. I walked to my two-a-days every day, adding 4 miles onto the already intense workouts. My eating was clean, and my hard work was paying off!
In August, Deb and I set out for a two and a half week vacation. When I made the arrangements, I knew I would be anxious about being away for that long.We would fly to New York and then drive down to

Easily my best purchase of the year!
Ormond Beach, FL. I went through with it anyway. I wanted to spend time with my family and friends in New York, plus I felt like it would be a well deserved vacation after working so hard this year. I was desperate to get to the beaches of Long Island and spend time in NYC! I packed the Vitamix, sent some plant-based protein powder ahead of time and didn't look back!
A two and a half week vacation is very long time to be away. I missed my routine. I missed my intense workouts. I made a strong effort to keep moving in the right direction while I was away. I attended a local

Brooklyn Bridge
fitness studio and used the Jungle Gym XT at home. Deb and I logged HIIT workouts nearly every day. Burpees aren't that bad with an ocean view, right? After having a great time in NY and FL (not to mention every other stop along the way), it was time to head home to ATX and get back to business.
This has been my first week back to work. I have been getting up at 4:30 a.m. every day and heading to Beyond Fit to get my cardio workouts in. On Monday and Wednesday, I also returned in the evening for strength training. Hey - that's where I am headed now. Time to lift heavy!
